When you configure a proxy server on your Mac, applications send their network traffic via the proxy server before going to their destination. This may be required by your employer to bypass a firewall, or you can use a proxy to bypass geoblocation and access websites that are not available in your country.

The proxy server you define here will be used by Apple Safari, Google Chrome and other applications that meet the proxy settings of your system. Some applications, including Mozilla Firefox, can have their own custom proxy settings regardless of your system settings.

Open the System Preferences application by clicking on it in your Dock or by going to the Apple menu> System Preferences. Click on the “Network” icon.

Select the network connection you are using from the list. For example, if you want to configure the proxys used when connecting to Wi-Fi networks, select “Wi-Fi”. If you want to configure the proxys used when connecting to cable networks, click “Ethernet”.

Click the “Advanced” button in the lower right corner of the Network window.

Select the “Proxies” tab. You will need to configure a proxy by activating one or more protocol check boxes here.

So that your Mac detects if a proxy is required and automatically configures the proxy parameters, check the “Auto Proxy Discover” box. Your Mac will use the Proxy Auto Discover, or WPAD web protocol, to automatically detect if a proxy is required. This parameter can be used on business or school networks, for example.

Even after activating this option, your Mac will only use a proxy if it is detected using WPAD. If you never want your Mac to use a proxy, even if a proxy is detected with WPAD, leave this box unchecked.

To use an automatic proxy configuration script, also called .PAC file, check the “Automatic proxy configuration” box. Enter the address of the script in the URL area. Your network administrator or proxy provider will provide you with the address of the proxy configuration script, if you need it.

If you do not need to use an automatic proxy configuration script to configure your proxy settings, leave this box unchecked.

To manually configure a proxy, you must activate one or more of the following: “Proxy Web (HTTP)”, “Secure Web Proxy (HTTSPS)”, “Proxy FTP”, “Proxy SOCKS”, “Streaming Proxy (RTSP)” And the check boxes “Gopher Proxy”. Enter the address and port number of the proxy for each option you activate. If you have received a user name and password for the proxy server, activate the option “The proxy server requires a password” and enter the user name and password.

For example, suppose you want to configure a proxy used for HTTP, HTTPS and FTP connections. You must check the boxes “Proxy Web (HTTP)”, “Secure Web Proxy (HTTTPS)” and “Proxy FTP”. After checking each of them, you must enter the address and port of the proxy server in the right pane. If you want to use the same proxy server for all three, you must enter the same address three times. if you have received different proxy server addresses for different protocols, you must enter different proxy server addresses for these connections.

If you do not want to manually configure a proxy, make sure that all of these boxes are not checked.

The remaining parameters allow you to bypass the proxy server when connecting to specific addresses and domains that you configure.

The check box “Exclude simple host names” allows you to bypass the proxy for all “single host names”. These are often used on local networks and intranets. For example, a network can have a local portal website or a local file server on “file server”. In other words, users may have to plug “http: // portal /” or “https: // fileerver /” into their address bar to access these systems. This type of host name only works on a local network. By checking this box, you can bypass the proxy for all simple host names on the networks to which you connect.

The “Contouring proxy settings for these hosts and domains” field contains a list of host names, domain names and IP address ranges that will not be accessible via the proxy. For example, it contains “* .local” by default. The “*” here is a joker and fits everything. This means that everything that ends in .local, including server.local, database.local and anything.local, will be accessible directly without going through the proxy.

To add your own domain names and addresses, simply separate each by a comma and a space. For example, to indicate to your Mac to access without going through the proxy, you must modify the line to:

* .local, 192.254 / 16,

If you have problems connecting to FTP servers after configuring an FTP proxy, make sure the “Use passive FTP (PASV) mode” option is activated at the bottom of the window here. It is activated by default.

Click on “OK” to save your settings when you are finished. Click “Apply” in the lower right corner of the network settings screen and your changes will take effect.

If there is a problem with the proxy server settings, for example, if the proxy server breaks down or if you have misinformed the details, you will see a network error message when using applications such as than Safari and Google Chrome. For example, Safari will indicate that it cannot find the server you are trying to access, while Chrome will display a more descriptive error message “ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED”. You will need to correct the settings on your proxy server to continue.
